Root canal therapy is utilized when tooth decay extends to the root, alleviating pain by cleaning and deadening the affected area. Following this, a crown is placed to seal off the tooth, preventing further decay and safeguarding its integrity.
Root canal treatment is often recommended for restoring infected or injured teeth due to its numerous benefits, including effectively preserving the natural tooth structure, maintaining its appearance and function, and preventing the spread of infection to neighboring teeth.
What Does A Root Canal Procedure Entail?
Root canal treatment typically involves multiple steps and may require more than one appointment:
Administration of local anesthesia for patient comfort.
Placement of a dental dam to isolate the tooth and keep it dry.
Creation of an opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber.
Removal of the pulp tissue from the pulp chamber and root canals, followed by cleaning and shaping of the root canals.
Application of medication to eliminate bacteria, if necessary.
Temporary filling placement to seal the crown opening, or immediate placement of a permanent filling.
Prescription of antibiotics if infection is present and has spread.
Removal of temporary filling and filling of root canals with gutta-percha.
Restoration of the tooth with a dental crown or permanent filling for strength and appearance improvement.
